Representative of the Associate Professorship Board: Professor Hana Barankova
The lecture will be given in English.
Abstract: Production of electricity from sunlight using solar cells (photovoltaics) is shaping up to be a major contributor towards reduced global CO2 emissions. This is thanks to rapid cost reductions and an explosion in new installations, which have put photovoltaics on the verge of undercutting all other electricity sources in terms of the cost of power produced. In this lecture, we will introduce photovoltaic technologies and look at the historical developments that led to their current status. We will examine some of the factors that determine the cost of electricity from photovoltaics and see at how future technological improvements – as well as potential challenges – could shape the rise of this important technology.
